Between 1856 and 1868 the Basuto engaged in conflict with the Orange Free State.  Their King, Moshoeshoe I, sought British protection.  On 29 August 1865, he wrote to Sir Philip Wodehouse, the Governor of Cape Colony:  After a 1955 request by the Basutoland Council to legislate its internal affairs, in 1959 a new constitution gave Basutoland its first elected legislature. This was followed in April 1965 with general legislative elections with universal adult suffrage in which the Basotho National Party (BNP) won 31 and the Basutoland Congress Party (BCP) won 25 of the 65 seats contested.

The first king was Mosheshwe II, a descendant of Mosheshwe I (*1790- 1870) who was the most important chief of Basutoland after 1828.
